"Streaming in Pri4 to be scrapped in 2008. In its place, weaker students will take subjects they are good in at Standard level, and subjects they are weak in at Foundation level"
Cynically, isn't this just a new way of doing the same thing? The aim of scrapping the old system was to get rid of the social stigma of being labeled "EM3". But having Foundation subjects, which are at a lower level of difficulty are taken only by those who are weak in their studies, just creates another divide between stronger an weaker students. Trying out new systems that retain the essential segregation mentality of smart vs not so smart will continue to foster a sense of superiority and elitism among those with better grades. A solution, however unlikely that it will happen, is to abolish society's mentality that doing well in studies makes a person better, because as long as this thinking is prevalent in the minds of the majority, those who fail at school will be looked down upon. In the short term? Instead of giving weaker students dumbed down subjects, have a range of different ones that they can find their strengths in, such as art, theater, dance, music, history and sports. This way, they can't be compared with those taking the same subjest at the higher Standard level, but rather they are on a different, not better or worse, scale which can't be compared. And these subjects are not to be restricted to the weaker students either, everyone who has a flair or interest can take it. No drawing of lines, no negetive labelling.
