New additions to phrasemeaning.com

1) In the 1400's a law was set forth that a man was not allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence we have "the rule of thumb".

2) In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase... "goodnight, sleep tight."

3) In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts... So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them "Mind your pints and quarts, and settle down." It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's"

4) Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

A follow-up discussion for pt. 5

Biao says:
the driver dun hit u, but exit the car n beat u up.

MJ. Aftermath of the Legend, Hero from the Yesteryears. says:
first normal reaction is to verbal assault what

MJ. Aftermath of the Legend, Hero from the Yesteryears. says:
no one will like stop the car then chiong out to bash you

Biao says:
they do when you whip out the keys.

MJ. Aftermath of the Legend, Hero from the Yesteryears. says:
then they beat you up, and they get charged for assault, even worse then lose license

MJ. Aftermath of the Legend, Hero from the Yesteryears. says:
so its the same, they lose

Biao says:
hmmm.... ya...

Biao says:
so no need to fear.

MJ. Aftermath of the Legend, Hero from the Yesteryears. says:
yeahh. no need at all

Adding on to the bottom list.

5. Next time we decide to cross a road, we need not think twice on the dangers of getting hit because, as simple as that, any car will DARE NOT hit you. Just walk lor. If they hit you they will get demerit points and risk losing their license. Humans own the road, cos if you're hit you dont get blamed but the car gets blamed. What's the human got to lose besides one's life? The driver loses the car license, and you dont have to care about losing your life once youre dead anyway! And if the car stops in time to avoid hitting you and starts horning and showing rude fingers whatsoever, you whip out your sharp bunch of keys in front of them, and THEY SCARED ALREADY.

Disclaimer: The above contributor will not be held responsible for the demise of any curious soul intelligent enough to attempt jaywalking without watching the road. ha. ha.

1. This is my 7th consecutive post in Funtypeople. I spend way too much time on the internet.

2. a. "haha" means any spelling or mis-spelling of that word and includes any other variation that is prescribed as a synonym for the purposes of this Point or that falls within a class of words that is prescribed for those purposes;

2. b. MJ and i came to a conclusion that "haha"s have become an integral part of MSN conversations, and that to not use it would define a hostile tone, even in the absense of intention. This is contradictory to the case of normal conversation where "haha" would be optional and used specifically to signal laughter, rather than being used periodically just to convey aBall light-hearted tone.

2. c. Therefore, i will attempt to reverse this lunacy one MSN conversation at a time, by only using "haha" where appropriate.

2. d. haha

3. Based on empirical evidence, and our great powers of funty deduction, elimination, gossip, nonsense and creative blank filling, we have concluded that Bong is actually a closet chiongster(clubber); hereby refered to as "Bongster"; seeing as the Bongster is always busy at night, and complains of tiredness often. The Bongster, under the guise of being busy with other activities in line with those the daytime Bong would engage in, would don the night-time alterego and head off to chic clubs and bars that light the entertainment scene. Bong by day, Bongster by night. Who knew she was so happening?

4. Toys these days are so hi-tech. When we were young, a ball was just a ball. It bounced. But now, when you want to buy a ball, it doesn't only bounce, but is also an aeroplane, machine gun, barbiedoll and cooking set(battries not included).

NEC launched its latest laptop PC on Tuesday with a splash. A bottle of water was poured over the computer while it was operating to demonstrate its toughness to harsh environmental conditions.

The "Shield Pro" FC-N21S laptop is rated to IP54, an environmental protection rating developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization.

About Buxfer

Buxfer started as a small script one of us wrote about 3 years ago. As graduate students, having food almost always meant eating out with a bunch of fellow sufferers somewhere on Craig Street. With such a high rate of accumulating bills, our memories and scraps of paper were just not enough. So we wrote a small simple script to keep track of our debts. And boy, did we love it! Well, we thought maybe the others would find this useful too.
