For as long as I can remember, students in Singapore have been segregated based on their academic ability and this has inevitably resulted in the unspoken identification of one's social standing based on the person's academic stream. The system has to be acknowledged for its active step towards changing such attitudes but the effectiveness of its effort is yet to be seen. Besides offering subjects at a more elementary level for weaker students, which in essence is still segregation, perhaps offering a more diverse variety of subjects in the arts and sciences might be more effective in the integration of 'weaker' and 'stronger' students at the same level. Realistically though, this might also be limited in result as people still maintain traditional ideas of what they consider to be 'better subjects'. The changing of society's mentality is definitely not one which happens overnight and it is certainly is a great challenge. The result of the system's implementations may not look to be too promising at this point in time but at least, the act of this first step is an encouraging one.
